Winter warm-up

Striking looks for the season

Clothing that can transform into a variety of easy pieces. Floaty, slouchy and soft sweaters that feel great and work for every body type. Fabrics mixed with leather to create mixed-media fashions. Those are a few of the fashion trends for winter 2013-14 in Ulster County.

“There’s an emphasis on big, cozy sweaters, on cocooning,” says Julie Mazur, owner of Rambling Rose in New Paltz. “It’s about wrapping yourself up in warmth.”

And designers are mixing fabrics, such as cloth and leather, or knitted and quilted items, says Julie Safran, owner of Verde in New Paltz. “What people are doing with fabrics these days is amazing.”

That includes making clothes soft, and flattering.

“You can look good no matter what size you are,” says Daisy Bolle, owner of DIG boutique in Saugerties, who is enthusiastic about the high-end edgy shapes that fit and flatter all types of bodies. Better yet, “They’ve found a way to make clothes 10 times softer than they’ve ever been,” she says.

Faux fur is big this season, as well as military-inspired clothing, says Beth Patramale, owner of Next Boutique in Kingston. And, she says, there’s a lot of plaid to be had. “It’s not just for holidays anymore.”
